Teacher of the Year

Qualifications for the Award: The candidate must be a teacher of chemistry at a high school within the area served by the Central Texas Section of the American Chemical Society.
We select a High School Chemistry teacher of the Year based on the recomendations of principals, Department Heads, other teachers, students and parents of students as well as members of the section.

Nominations: The candidate will be nominated by a letter from a person familiar with the qualifications and achievements of the candidate.
If you know of an especially deserving High School Chemistry teacher please contact us by phone or E-mail to obtain a list of specific requirements for the nomination!!

Award: The award consists of a $100 stipend and a certificate.

Chemistry Olympiad

Our Chemistry Olympiad program includes competitions at the local, national and international level.
We want as many schools and as many students to participate as possible. In the last couple of years participation in local level competitions has increased to over 100 students from as many as 7 different schools.  We are hoping for even more in the future!
For the past several years a laboratory practical has been added to the two part written exam giving it a new and interesting dimension. It has lengthened the time requirement from 3.5 to 4.5 hours, necessitated holding the competition at a site suitable for the experiments. But, it has also given the students an opportunity to display a broader range of talents and accomplishments than a written test and reemphasized the nature of chemistry as an experimental science. All participating students are awarded certificates.

High School Science Night

Each year we try to put on a program at one of the area High Schools dealing with a subject we feel will be of interest to high school students and their teachers.
Topics such as careers in Chemistry and Chemical Magic shows are popular!!
Often ACS tour speakers have prepared talks tailored for high school and general public audiences.
This program is usually put on early in the new year, January or February.
Please contact us to volunteer your school as a location or to suggest topics you would like to hear!!!
